“I’m coming to visit, but I haven’t bought my return plane ticket to go back yet.” “Who knows?” she joked, “Maybe I won’t come back!”
This is a message I got from my cousin who hasn’t been on a vacation in many years. She’s from the Midwest and is traveling to California with her daughter.
The interesting thing about her words….’Maybe I won’t come back’, got me thinking…
Most people say things like that just as a joke…they don’t really believe that they won’t come back, because they really don’t think that they have a choice.
The truth is…we do have a choice! What is stopping us from trying something new? Why can’t we decide to not go back to the life we’ve been living? What’s stopping us from making a change? Why is it engrained in our conscience minds that we can’t do something that may seem a bit outrageous?
It makes me sad to think that people continue to live a life that doesn’t truly make them happy, only because of their limiting beliefs. The truth is, we have unlimited choices! We can do, live, believe, choose, whatever we want to!
Back to my cousin…She has lived in the same town she grew up in for over 50 years! Yes, she has family there, a job, a house, and she is comfortable there. The truth is that most people, especially from the Midwest it seems, become very comfortable because it is all they know. It’s scary to try something new, so packing up and moving to a new place that is unfamiliar would be terrifying to most people!
I’ve chosen to live my life on the premise of ‘what’s the worst that could happen?’
Think about that with any decision you’re faced with. If I choose to do something that is out of my comfort zone, what is the worst thing that could happen if I make that scary choice? Normally, the worst thing that could happen is so insignificant that in the end, it doesn’t really matter! It’s usually pretty easy to go back to your ‘safe’ zone, so there really isn’t much of a risk!
Take that leap of faith and do something that seems a little crazy…what’s the worst that could happen? You go back to where you are right now? What’s the best thing that could happen? Maybe you find your true passion and finally start living your dreams? Maybe you’ll learn something you could have never learned anywhere else?
Life is short, so in the words of ‘Nike’…Just Do It!
